Examples of design and document layout for both macro and micro formats show a use of creativity outside of branding and portray a solid foundation of my design knowledge.

Twilight Book Cover

Problem:

Recreate the cover of a novel.

Solution:

I chose Twilight, a best selling novel, in order to challenge myself to design a cover that better represents its story. I developed a design that is both beautiful and grotesque with two anatomical hearts. One heart has a healthy appearance to represent Bella Swan, a human, with the other heart decaying to represent Edward Cullen, a vampire. I then positioned them to create the abstract heart symbol for love due to the story revolving around the two characters' romance. I balanced the grotesque nature of the hearts with an elegant script title for the novel and wrapped a flourish around the hearts to represent the coming together of the two characters who begin a romance that spans over 4 novels in a series.

Cheetah

Problem:

Design an original piece in the style of an established graphic artist with a focus on wildlife and nature.

Solution:

Through research of graphic artists that focus on flora and fauna as their subjects, I chose to replicate the work of Justin Maller. His colorful designs border the line of abstract and iconic design through his use of polygons and photorealistic colors. I selected a Cheetah for its powerful presence and its impressive ability to run at high speeds when hunting prey. I chose to capture that motion and power through the pose of the Cheetah, use of color, and shape design in its large muscular features. Use of color also creates the illusion of depth on the animal's stomach and legs as well as a necessary visual contrast.

Open House Invitation

Open House Invitation

Problem:

Generate an effective postcard invitation design that best represents Kennesaw State University's students in the Digital Writing, New Media Arts, and Technical Communication degree programs. Following university guidelines is key.

Solution:

I crafted rustic a design that represents the struggle students go through in college, those who are worn down but remain dignified and bold. The use of bright Kennesaw State University colors in combination with texture portray that struggle visually. The most important information about the event is displayed on the front of the card while the back holds the remaining information needed to reach the event on time. The back of the card carries over the color and texture design cues of the front to create a sense of unity.

The Sheriff Retires

Problem:

Design a two page spread on a subject that interests me using color, correctly attributing work to its authors and create a visually interesting document.

Solution:

To create a spread that is visually interesting through the use of depth I modified a photo licensed for reuse with modification to form a pop art style image of Peyton Manning. This image also functions as a dramatic framing element of design for its textual content. The text contains a strong information hierarchy through the use of headings, spacing, bullet points, and color to highlight specific information. A pull quote provides an interesting excerpt from the text to grab potential readers' attention and create more visual interest.
